Nitra Kalonji (Nigella Seeds)
Shop Pantry EssentialsSize: 100 g
About this item
Onion-seed flavour for naan and pickles. Nitra Kalonji, also called nigella seeds or habbat al barakah, are small black seeds with a nutty, slightly peppery taste.
Why cooks choose it
Sprinkled on naan and breads, kalonji toasts in the oven and gives that familiar bakery flavour. It is one of the five seeds in panch phoron, a classic in North Indian pickles and a lovely finish on roasted potatoes and vegetable sabzis.
What to cook with it
- Kalonji naan
- Nigella seed roasted potatoes
- Mixed vegetable pickles
- Bengali panch phoron sabzi
How to use
Press a pinch onto naan or flatbread before baking. For tadka, add 1/2 teaspoon to hot oil and let the seeds sizzle for a few seconds before adding vegetables.
