Yellow Dal Fry

A quick, comforting dal made from split yellow peas, finished with a classic onion-tomato-cumin tadka.

Method

Cook the dal
Boil the mutter dal with the turmeric and water for 20–25 minutes until soft, skimming off any foam.

Mash and season
Mash the dal lightly and season with salt, adjusting consistency with hot water if needed.

Make the tadka
Heat the oil in a pan, add cumin seed, and fry until it crackles. Add the onion and cook 5–6 minutes until golden.

Add tomato and spice
Stir in the tomato and chilli powder, cooking 4–5 minutes until the tomato softens.

Combine
Pour the tadka into the dal, stir well, and simmer 5 minutes. Finish with coriander and serve.
Nitra tip
Mutter dal cooks a little faster than toor dal — keep an eye on it so it doesn't turn to mush before the tadka is ready.
